Genicular Artery Embolization For Chronic Knee Pain And Osteoarthritis

Genicular artery embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that targets the genicular arteries, which are responsible for supplying blood to the knee joint. By reducing the blood flow to the knee, the procedure aims to alleviate chronic knee pain. The genicular arteries are branches of the femoral artery that supply blood to the knee joint. In individuals with chronic knee pain, these arteries can become enlarged and contribute to inflammation and pain. Genicular artery embolization aims to reduce the blood flow to the knee joint, thereby decreasing the pain signals and providing relief.

The genicular artery embolization procedure involves the use of a catheter, which is a thin, flexible tube. The catheter is inserted into the femoral artery, which is located in the groin area. Using X-ray guidance, the catheter is carefully maneuvered to reach the genicular arteries.

Once the catheter is in position, embolic agents are injected into the genicular arteries. These agents can be small particles or coils that are designed to block or narrow the arteries. The goal is to reduce the blood flow to the knee joint, which in turn can reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.

The procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia, which means you will be awake but numbed in the area where the catheter is inserted. This allows you to provide feedback to the vascular team during the procedure. The use of local anesthesia also helps to minimize the risks associated with general anesthesia.

Genicular artery embolization has shown promising results in clinical studies. Many patients experience a significant reduction in knee pain and improvement in their ability to perform daily activities. The procedure is especially beneficial for individuals who have not responded well to other conservative treatments, such as physical therapy or medication.

One of the advantages of genicular artery embolization is that it is a less invasive alternative to surgical interventions like knee replacement. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, which means you can go home on the same day as the procedure. Recovery time is generally shorter compared to surgery, and most individuals can resume their normal activities within a few days.

As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and complications associated with genicular artery embolization. These can include infection, bleeding, damage to blood vessels or nerves, and allergic reactions to the embolic agents. However, serious complications are rare, and the procedure is considered safe when performed by experienced vascular specialists.
