Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating – also known as hyperhidrosis – can be more than just a physical inconvenience. For many, it impacts daily life, causes social anxiety and interferes with work or relationships. At our clinic, we understand how distressing this condition can be and we’re here to help you take back control.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterised by sweating that exceeds the body’s normal needs for cooling. It typically affects the underarms, palms, soles, or face, but can also occur across the body.

There are two main types:

1. Primary focal hyperhidrosis: Usually starts in adolescence and isn’t caused by an underlying condition.

2. Secondary generalised hyperhidrosis: Linked to medications or medical conditions such as infections, hormonal imbalances, or neurological disorders.

Accurate diagnosis is key and our doctors will work closely with you to determine the cause and tailor your treatment.

Our Personalised Approach to Treating Hyperhidrosis

We offer a range of effective therapies – both non-invasive and advanced – to help reduce or eliminate excessive sweating:

1. Medical-Grade Topical Treatments

We may begin with prescription-strength antiperspirants or medicated wipes that block sweat glands. These are safe, easy to apply, and often serve as a first-line treatment for mild to moderate symptoms.

2. Botox® Injections

Botulinum toxin injections are FDA-approved for hyperhidrosis and highly effective in blocking the nerves that trigger sweat glands. We provide this treatment in-clinic, with results that typically last 4–6 months. Most patients experience significant improvements after just one session.

3. Iontophoresis

For sweating of the hands and feet, we offer iontophoresis—an in-clinic treatment using a low electrical current delivered through water to reduce sweat gland activity. It’s non-invasive, safe, and well-tolerated.

4. Oral Medications

For those with more widespread sweating, oral anticholinergic medication may be prescribed under medical supervision. These are tailored to your health profile to minimise side effects while maximising benefit.

5. Surgical Consultation

For cases that are resistant to other therapies, we may refer for surgical evaluation, including sympathectomy. While more invasive, this procedure can be life-changing for certain patients.

When to Consult a Healthcare Provider

If excessive sweating interferes with daily activities or causes emotional distress, it’s essential to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can help determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatments tailored to individual needs.

Managing hyperhidrosis involves a combination of treatments and lifestyle adjustments. With the right approach, individuals can significantly reduce symptoms and improve their quality of life.
