Second Singapore ECO Microwave Ablation Workshop for Varicose Veins

The VEC had the delight to help run the second workshop using Eco’s Microwave ablation catheter for varicose veins treatment again at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore with our good friend Dr Chuo Ren Leong, senior consultant and head of vascular surgery service at KTPH.

We managed to demonstrate the microwave ablation technique on several patients to delegates from Taiwan and Malaysia during the Wednesday morning. Case demonstration was again interspersed with helpful lectures with tips and tricks using the device by Dr Tang Tjun Yip, Dr Julian Wong and Dr Leong. Dr Dexter Chan another consultant in vascular surgery at KTPH came back from reservist to help demonstrate the technique expertly. Had a fruitful morning exchanging ideas with our delightful colleagues from Kl and Taipei.

Look forward to the next workshop! Many thanks to all for their hard work including Johnson and team from Brilliant Medical who supported the running of the workshop:pray::pray:. Also we would like to thank the nursing staff from day surgery at Ktph for their help and time once again.

Microwave ablation offers several advantages as a treatment option for varicose veins. Some of the key advantages include:

  1. Minimally invasive: Microwave ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed on an outpatient basis. It involves a small incision and the use of a thin catheter, which reduces the need for extensive surgical incisions and leads to quicker recovery times compared to traditional vein stripping surgery.

  2. High success rate: Microwave ablation has been shown to have a high success rate in closing off varicose veins. The heat generated by the microwave energy effectively seals the vein, preventing blood flow and reducing the appearance of the varicose vein.

  3. Quick and efficient: The microwave ablation procedure is usually completed within a relatively short period of time, often taking less than an hour. This means that patients can return home on the same day and resume their normal activities with minimal downtime.

  4. Minimal discomfort: Microwave ablation is generally well-tolerated by patients, with minimal discomfort during and after the procedure. Local anesthesia is typically used to numb the area, reducing any potential pain or discomfort.

  5. Less scarring: The small incision used for microwave ablation results in minimal scarring compared to traditional vein stripping surgery. This can be particularly beneficial for patients concerned about cosmetic appearance.

  6. Improved cosmetic outcomes: Microwave ablation can lead to improved cosmetic outcomes by reducing the size and prominence of varicose veins. This can help boost self-confidence and improve the appearance of the legs.

  7. Potential for faster recovery: Compared to traditional vein stripping surgery, microwave ablation typically offers a faster recovery time. Patients may experience less post-operative pain, bruising, and swelling, allowing them to resume their normal activities more quickly.
