Senior Vascular and General Surgeon

Dr Wong is a senior Vascular and General Surgeon based at Gleneagles Medical Centre, Singapore. Prior to private practice, he served in government hospitals for 31 years. He completed his medical and specialist training (CCST) in the academic unit in South Manchester University hospital, UK and was an established NHS Consultant General and Vascular surgeon (University Hospital of North Staffordshire & Nuffield Hospital) before coming back to Singapore 10 years ago. He served in National University of Singapore Hospital (NUH) as a senior consultant and Head of Division of Vascular and Endovascular surgery in CTVS department, National University Heart Centre. During this time, he was also Director of Aortic Centre and Director of vascular Laboratory. He offered full range of vascular and endovascular surgery as well as any redo complex vascular surgery.

Delivering clinical excellence with attentive communications to patients is his basic ethos. Practicing evidence-based medicine with the latest technology and treatment is essential in his practice.

CLINICAL EXPERTISE

Dr Wong is highly regarded for his specialised clinical interests and skills in:

  • Aortic surgery (EVAR/ TEVAR/ FEVAR/ Hybrid/ Complex open and Redo)
  • Carotid surgery/ stenting
  • Venous disease (EVLT/ redo/ classical open) and venous ulcers management
  • Renal access surgery or dialysis
  • Onco-vascular surgery
  • Diabetic foot revascularization (Bypass, angioplasty and safari technique)

With his consultant practice previously in NHS UK and NUHCS Singapore, he has 18 years of diversified scope of vascular practice both in Europe and Asia.

ACADEMIC WORK

Dr Wong has co-authored about 50 publications including 5 book chapters. He has strong interest is in medical education. He had been part of the SIG and General Surgery Core faculty for NUH last 10 years. He also set up the international vascular fellowship programs in Singapore, and over the last 10 years, he had over 50 senior trainees, of which he nurtured 10 vascular consultants in various hospitals locally.

Apart from that, he is one of the Court of Examiners for both Royal college of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. Locally he is the Chief Examiner for MRCS and Chairman of MMed (Surgery), and an FRCS examiner. He has and is still revising both exams to be future proof for Singapore surgical training.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

He served as Co-Chairman of MOH National diabetic foot Committee, Advisor to National Podiatry Framework, Ancillary Committee member of TOSP committee, MOH-FRCS exam advisory panel and National Examiner for General surgery (MOH).

AWARDS

During Dr Wong’s tenure in NHS UK, he received level 2 local clinical excellence award for his contribution in Vascular services in University Hospital North Staffordshire. Together with the cardiology team, he received a Staff Team Innovation Award for starting TAVI service in 2007.

At NUH Singapore, Dr Wong received his 10 year Long Service Award in 2021 and Resident Choice Award in 2020 and 2021 for his postgraduate teaching.
